Insights from Working in Politics and Government Digital Communications: Reflection on my Experience

As a digital communications specialist, I've had the opportunity to work in various sectors and industries, but working in politics and government has been one of my most rewarding experiences. I've had the honour of working with Mr Sihle Zikalala, the MEC (Member of the Executive Council) of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Working in this field has provided me with an inside look at the world of politics and its challenges. It's not an easy job because you have to be on your toes, think ahead, and navigate the complex landscape of public opinion and media relations. However, it is also extremely rewarding because you get to play a small part in shaping your country's future and improving the lives of its citizens.

Understanding the role of social media in shaping public perception and opinion is one of the most important aspects of working in politics and government digital communications. Politicians and government officials are under increasing pressure to present a cohesive and consistent message online,

thanks to the rise of platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This necessitates careful planning and strategy and a thorough understanding of the various audiences served by each platform.

Working with MEC Zikalala has given me an excellent opportunity to learn about this firsthand. Sihle Zikalala is a good man who is highly respected within the wider community. He is known for his strong leadership skills and his dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others.

He is a highly respected leader within the ANC (African National Congress) and a member of the NEC (National Executive Committee), with a solid social media presence. I've enjoyed assisting him in developing various digital campaigns and initiatives, crafting his online message and engaging with his followers.

My experience working in politics and government digital communications has been unique and rewarding. It is not for everyone, but for those who thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, it can be an extremely rewarding career path. If you're thinking about a career in this field, my advice is to keep up with the latest trends and technologies and be willing to take on new challenges and learn from your experiences.
