On Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive prescreening of Woman King hosted by Moja Love TV and Ster-Kinekor Theatres in Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Durban.
The movie is inspired by the historic all-women army of Dahomey, a West African kingdom in Benin. While there are critical views about the role the Kingdom of Dahomey played in the Transatlantic slave trade, the movie focuses on the resilience of the Dahomey soldiers who defied their King to end the slave trade the Dahomey Kingdom had built their wealth upon.
Thuso Mbedu is a South African actress who plays Nawi, one of the lead characters in the film. She stars alongside the award-winning actress Viola Davis who plays Nanisca, the army General who, through her resilience, is awarded the prestigious title of Woman King by the Dahomey King Ghezo, played by the handsome John Boyega.

Mbedu's Oscar-deserving thrilling performance will send shivers to your skin because, finally, we see women we can culturally relate to playing lead characters that transform into powerful black women. That important representation has never been done in film.
In films, black women have always played supportive, servant and submissive roles. However, in Woman King, black women are shown as powerful and self-sufficient leaders determined to bring change.
Thank you, Moja Love TV and Lindiwe Mbonambi, for the exclusive prescreening experience!
The movie is now showing in all Ster-Kinekor Theatres in South Africa.
